Selvoline and an entire orchestra on the roof of Milan Cathedral

On the occasion of the VivilDuomo event, we were commissioned to build a temporary structure on the inclined terrace of the central nave of the Milan Cathedral.

This challenge proved to be particularly complex due to the need to preserve the historical value of the building, the risks associated with positioning at height and the management of multiple stakeholders.

Solution
We designed and built a 156 m² structure using aluminium, a material chosen for its lightness and strength.

The platform rested on the sloping pitch of the roof, with a height varying from 60 cm at the ridge to 320 cm at the eaves. To adapt to the specific conformation of the terrace, we modified the standard lattice structure.

Given the low load-bearing capacity of the Duomo roof, whose marble slabs are supported against each other, we developed a solution that would guarantee safety and stability without damaging the historical architecture.

The structure was anchored to the roof beams with spring hooks to avoid any negative impact on the integrity of the building.

Realisation
The construction of the structure required careful planning and coordination with the local authorities and those responsible for the Cathedral. Each phase of the project was carefully monitored to ensure that strict safety and conservation standards were met.

Results
The structure successfully hosted an entire orchestra, providing a unique and memorable experience for visitors to the Duomo of Milan.

The versatility of the project allowed the structure to be dismantled and reassembled inside the Duomo when necessary, demonstrating our ability to provide flexible and adaptable solutions.
